Can I leave my dog alone in the car for a few minutes on a hot day?

No. Dogs do not sweat and shed heat almost entirely by panting, the temperature inside a car rises extremely fast once the engine is off, and the few minutes of "I am only running in to buy something" are enough to kill. Opening a window, parking in shade, and leaving water do not count as safe. Flat-faced dogs, overweight dogs, thick-coated dogs, older dogs, and dogs with heart or airway disease are at even higher risk.
