牙周非手術治療的基礎仍是診斷、口腔清潔指導、齦上與齦下牙菌斑及牙結石控制、根面處理、風險調整與再評估。Er,Cr:YSGG 在部分試驗中被放在這套流程旁邊；研究問題應是「作為輔助，有沒有增加具臨床意義的改善」，不是「能不能用設備取代標準清創」。 十五位成人、九十個深度至少 5 mm 部位的分口先導研究中，Er,Cr:YSGG 加標準治療與標準治療單獨使用，在十二個月的平均改善相近；測試部位探測深度由 6.1 降至 4.2 mm，對照由 6.2 降至 4.3 mm。 只有起始深度至少 7 mm 的次群，在九與十二個月達成淺化的部位比例出現顯著差異。
