Heatstroke in a dog, cat or rabbit: how should you handle it?

First confirm which species you are dealing with. The same sign is handled differently in different species, and copying what is done for another species can be harmful. This article covers: rabbits / guinea pigs / chinchillas, dogs, cats, wild / working animals.

Applies to all species

Signs: nonstop panting after heat exposure / hard exercise + body temperature too high + collapse

• Move the animal into the shade + wet its whole body with room-temperature (not ice) water + run a fan or open a window for airflow + get it to a veterinarian immediately
• Never immerse the animal in ice water, do not wrap it in a wet towel so that heat is trapped, do not wait for the temperature to "return to normal" before setting off

Signs: dogs (flat-faced dogs, overweight dogs, older dogs and working dogs are at highest risk), cats, working animals (heatstroke on duty is one of the leading causes of death)

Rabbits / guinea pigs / chinchillas

Signs: signs of heatstroke (panting, collapse), reduced appetite or reduced droppings (no whitelisted source was obtained for a chinchilla-specific number of hours within which to seek care, so no figure is listed; as a fellow hindgut fermenter, the sooner the better), severe traumatic hair loss with bleeding.

Dogs
