The Eleven O'Clock Club: give the morning back to the traveler — starting with 69 Boso Peninsula lodgings that check out at 11 or later, checked page by page

"The Eleven O'Clock Club" (十一時倶楽部) is a lodging pledge founded by Washin Cat-Healing Village (和心村), starting with the Boso Peninsula: a standard check-out of 11:00 or later, to give the morning back to the traveler. Japanese people sleep among the least of all OECD countries. In a survey by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (厚生労働省), 38.5% of men and 43.6% of women slept less than 6 hours a day. For Japanese guests, the extra hour of a hotel morning is one of the few mornings with no alarm clock. For travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and nearby, 11:00 in Japan is 10:00 to the body. This column gathers the evidence from sleep science, Japanese official statistics, jet lag, the psychology of holidays, road safety, industry practice and the market. Each reason comes with a research or official source. It also lists the 69 Boso Peninsula lodgings with a standard check-out of 11:00 or later, sorted into seven areas, with links to official sites and booking pages. On 2026-10-18, we read every listing page by page: 1,067 on Rakuten Travel, 589 on Jalan and 551 on Yahoo! Travel.

The Eleven O'Clock Club|ゆっくりの朝を約束する宿 (inns that promise a slow morning). Lodgings that promise you a slow morning, founded by Washin Village and starting with the Boso Peninsula38.

After a night in Boso, the real luxury is a morning with no rush.

Of the 1,067 lodgings listed on Rakuten Travel, 802 have a standard check-out of 10:005. So what does one more hour change? Let's start with sleep.

What is the Eleven O'Clock Club?

A standard check-out of 11:00 or later, written on a booking site or the official site where anyone can check it38.

That is the only rule. Meet it, and you are a member.

The idea comes from Washin Village. The cats there count a well-slept, unhurried morning as one of the healthy habits of cat-healing culture38.

The first chapter starts with the Boso Peninsula. The 69 lodgings in this article were found by checking booking sites page by page. The lodgings did not sign themselves up38.

A lodging that wants to join only needs to move its standard check-out to 11:00 or later and say so on its booking page. We add it once we have checked38.

To join, just leave a message for the founder. Washin Village's Facebook page is facebook.com/washinmura, its Instagram is @washinmura_nature_glamping, its email is info@washinmura.jp, and its LINE official account is @washinmura39. Write "十一時倶楽部" and your inn's name in your message.

First, give sleep back to the trip

Japanese people already sleep too little. Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare surveyed adults in Reiwa 5. Of those sleeping less than 6 hours a day on average, the share was 38.5% for men and 43.6% for women. In the age groups from 30 to 60, it was over four in ten27. In an OECD comparison, Japan's 442 minutes was among the shortest30. The official sleep guide tells adults to aim for 6 hours or more28.

Catching up on days off helps, but it cannot clear weekday debt. The sleep guide says sleeping in on days off does not fully remove weekday daytime sleepiness, and the benefit is very limited. People who sleep less than 6 hours on weekdays still face a much higher risk of a shorter life, even if they catch up on days off29. A study that followed 43,880 people for 13 years found that those who slept short on weekdays but caught up on weekends had the same death rate as people who slept 6–7 hours every day24.

One more hour helps. The real fix is still enough sleep on weekdays.

What a hotel can do is not take away one more hour on this one day.

The first night is a poor night anyway. On the first night in a new place, one side of the brain stays on guard, like a night watch. You fall asleep more slowly and wake to sounds more easily. Researchers call this the "first-night effect"17.

Your first morning at a hotel is the morning you most need that extra sleep.

Just after waking, your brain is still booting up. That groggy feeling right after waking is called "sleep inertia". Thinking slows down noticeably, and it clears only as you stay awake longer. Sleep less the night before, and the fog gets heavier18.

A 10 a.m. check-out puts packing, paying and hitting the road right into your foggiest hour.

More sleep really does make the day sharper. When healthy young adults slept as long as they could, their daytime alertness, reaction speed and vigor scores all improved clearly19.

That hour also looks after the rest of your trip.

Sleep loss has a price. RAND estimated in 2016 that sleep loss costs Japan 1.86% to 2.92% of GDP, a larger share than in the US. People who sleep less than 6 hours a night have a 13% higher risk of death than those who sleep 7–9 hours31.

Your body clock is still at home

Travelers from the west still have their body clock in the old time zone. Japan and Korea are UTC+9. Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines and Singapore are UTC+8. Thailand, Vietnam and western Indonesia are UTC+720. Jet lag happens mainly because your body clock is still set to the old time zone. It takes a few days to adjust21.

So 11:00 in Japan is 10:00 or 9:00 to these travelers' bodies. Travelers from Europe and the Americas face an even bigger gap, and need later mornings even more in their first few days.

A holiday needs some empty time

A holiday works through rest and letting go. Work psychologists split "recovery" into four experiences: psychological detachment, relaxation, mastery and control22. A meta-analysis of seven studies found that holidays are good for health and well-being. But the effect fades soon after people go back to work23.

An unhurried morning is the cheapest rest your holiday can buy.

Sleep owed on workdays gets paid back on days off. Research on "social jetlag" finds that most people build up sleep debt on workdays and pay it back on days off25.

A travel day is the best day off there is.

Families with children need this hour even more. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine agrees that children aged 6 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours of sleep a day, and teens aged 13 to 18 need 8 to 10 hours36.

When the kids sleep well, the grown-ups' trip goes smoothly too.

Rushing itself drains happiness. "Time poverty", the lasting feeling of never having enough time, can weaken your sense of meaning in life. Time pressure also lowers your mood during everyday tasks37.

The last thing a holiday needs is a morning spent rushing to check out.

Wake up first, then hit the road

One more hour of sleep before driving is safer. A US crash study found this. Drivers who slept only 6 hours in the 24 hours before had 1.3 times the odds of being at fault, compared with those who slept 7–9 hours. At 5 hours it was 1.9 times, and at 4 hours 2.9 times. "Often feeling groggy on waking" was also linked to being at fault26.

The Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) analyzed 2019 data from Japan's National Police Agency (警察庁). About six in ten deaths and serious injuries from drowsy driving (居眠り運転) happened during private driving, including sightseeing, leisure and trips home. Most happened between 12 and 18 o'clock, followed by 4 to 8 o'clock32.

Most people in Boso drive. Check out an hour later, and you hit the road more awake.

Travelers want it, but few places offer it

Travelers will pay for it. In 2022, Oracle and Skift surveyed 5,266 consumers in 9 countries, including Japan. 37% said they would pay more for an early check-in or late check-out33.

In Boso, lodgings with an 11 a.m. check-out are rare. Of the 1,067 on Rakuten Travel, 829 want you out before 11:005. We read all three booking sites page by page. We found 55 hotels and ryokan with a standard check-out of 11:00 or later (50 are listed; 5 adults-only leisure hotels are not named). We also found 19 glamping sites, villas and similar lodgings with 4 or more rooms4.

Here are those 69.

One hour: how much is the difference?

Money: up to 6,667 yen. Under the model lodging terms, overtime use of a room can be charged at up to one third of the room rate; for a 20,000-yen room, 1 extra hour is 6,667 yen34. An inn with a 10 o'clock check-out sells you that 1 hour; an inn with an 11 o'clock check-out simply gives it to you.

Happiness: people who buy time are happier than people who buy things. In surveys of 6,271 people in the United States, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands, those who spend money to buy time report greater life satisfaction, effect size d = 0.24. In a two-week experiment, 60 working adults each spent 40 dollars: on the day they bought time, positive affect averaged 4.00, versus 3.71 on the day they bought a material thing, d = 0.33; perceived time pressure fell from 4.22 to 3.4940.

So the difference is not just 1 hour. It is a piece of happiness you could pay for, which the inn decides to give you for free. An 11 o'clock check-out is the inn giving that 1 hour away as a gift.

Why is it mostly 10?

No official rule says so.

Article 9 of the Japan Tourism Agency's 「モデル宿泊約款」 (model accommodation terms) only says 「午後_時から翌朝_時まで」 (from _ p.m. to _ the next morning), and each property fills in the times itself. If a guest uses the room past that time, the property may charge a third, a half or the full room rate, depending on the hours34.

The industry's own explanation is cleaning time. スーパーホテル (Super Hotel) says its 15 o'clock check-in and 10 o'clock check-out match the hours when most guests arrive and leave, so there is time to clean the rooms. At ryokan, staff often come in to put away the futons while guests are at breakfast35.

As for when 10 o'clock became the norm, we found no first-hand source.

Washin Village (和心村, 富津市高溝14) is a glamping site and old Japanese house where you stay with rescue cats. Its official site says 「16匹の保護猫と泊まれるグランピング」 (glamping where you can stay with sixteen rescue cats)8.

The cats founded the Eleven O'Clock Club and set their own check-out at 11:00 as the first promise38.

Six sources give check-out as 11:00: the FAQ pages of its official site in Japanese, English and Traditional Chinese, the structured data on its official home page, its Rakuten Travel page and its Jalan page9. For a late check-out, ask in advance10. It holds a simple lodging (簡易宿所) business license under the Hotel Business Act; Chiba Prefecture's roster of licensed lodging facilities lists it as No. R5-18, licensed 2023-11-2413.

Disclosure: 和心村 is run by 株式会社和心村. This site, IDAEO, is run by 株式会社和心. The two are affiliated companies7.

Washin Village's IDA identity page is at ida.idaeo.ai/www-washinmura-jp, with its company profile, official links and corporate number 704000111432641.

We checked Washin Village's data the same way as every other property.

One more look before you go

  • The times on the list are the "standard check-out". If a later check-out needs a paid add-on plan, we count the original time2.
  • The type split is our own call. Rentals and private lodgings with 3 rooms or fewer are left out, and a small hotel may be sorted wrongly6.
  • Properties change their rules. Go by the property page at the time you book2.
The morning of a trip is one of the few mornings no alarm clock wakes you.

The Eleven O'Clock Club starts with the Boso Peninsula.

Why is an 11 a.m. check-out better than 10?
Every reason has a source. Japanese people sleep among the least in the OECD, and about four in ten adults sleep less than 6 hours a day. Catching up on days off has limited benefit, but one more hour still helps. You sleep lightly on the first night in a new place. Thinking slows for the first hour after waking. More sleep improves daytime alertness. For travelers from UTC+8 and UTC+7 regions, 11:00 in Japan is 10:00 or 9:00 to the body. A holiday's recovery effect comes from rest and letting go. Six in ten deaths and serious injuries from drowsy driving (居眠り運転) happen during private driving. Children aged 6 to 12 need 9 to 12 hours of sleep a day. Time poverty weakens well-being. 37% of travelers would pay for a late check-out. And in Boso, lodgings with a check-out at 11 or later are rare.

Why do most Boso ryokan have a 10 a.m. check-out?
No official rule says so. The Japan Tourism Agency's model accommodation terms (モデル宿泊約款) leave the room-use times blank for each property to fill in. The industry's own explanation is cleaning time: rooms must be ready between the time most guests leave and the next guests arrive. Of the 1,067 on Rakuten Travel, 802 have a standard check-out of 10:00. We found no first-hand source on when 10 o'clock became the norm. Want to leave later? Ask the property directly whether it has a late check-out plan.

How does jet lag work out for travelers from abroad?
Japan and Korea are UTC+9. Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, the Philippines and Singapore are UTC+8, so Japan is one hour ahead. Thailand, Vietnam and western Indonesia are UTC+7, so Japan is two hours ahead. In your first few days, your body clock is mostly still in your home time zone, so 11:00 in Japan is like 10:00 or 9:00 to your body. Travelers from Europe and the Americas face an even bigger gap.
