My tooth does not hurt, so why does the dentist say I need a root canal? — Because symptoms and the state of the pulp do not correspond exactly. A systematic review and meta-analysis showed that **in asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis TNF-α is significantly raised as well, with no significant difference from symptomatic cases** [F1].
