How Long Do Dental Implants Last? What Decides Their Lifespan, and How to Keep Yours for Longer|
Implants are a very stable long-term option — across the implants included in research reviews, survival rates are generally above 95% (that review's follow-up ran from 6 to 60 months — at most five years, not a lifetime figure). But "a high survival rate" is not the same as "put it in and never think about it again". What really decides how long an implant stays with you is bruxism, long-term medication, and post-operative soft tissue maintenance: in people with a tendency to grind their teeth, the odds ratio for implant failure is about 2.19, and groups taking certain stomach medicines or antidepressants over the long term also show a relatively higher failure rate. Set these out clearly before surgery, look after things afterwards, and an implant has every chance of serving you for many years.

FAQ
- Can an implant last a lifetime?
- Survival rates for implants in the research are high (generally above 95% in the included studies), **but that review's follow-up ran from 6 to 60 months — five years at most, so it cannot answer "a lifetime" at all**, but those are group observations under particular conditions and follow-up periods, not a lifetime guarantee for an individual. How long yours lasts depends on your bone quality, your cleaning habits and your ongoing maintenance, and your dentist still has to assess your own situation [F1].
